Ideas for a Romanian Themed Party
Romania is an eastern-European country. To the North and East it shares borders with Moldova and Ukraine, to the West lie Hungary and Serbia, in the South is Bulgaria, and to the South-East Romania borders onto the Black Sea.
Over the centuries, what is now Romania (which is made up of the ancient territories of Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia) has been ruled by the Romans, Hungarians (Transylvania only) and the Ottoman Empire. In the latter half of the 20th Century communist Romania was part of the Warsaw Pact, until the revoluton of 1989.

Food for a Romania Themed PartyRomanian cooking shows influences and similarities with that of the countries around it, most notably Turkey, Austro-Hungary, Greece and the former Yugoslavian states. Soups, particularly the traditional Romanian sour soups or Ciorba are popular, as are meatballs - the two meet in what many consider to be Romania's national dish, Romanian Sour Meatball Soup - Ciorba de Perisoare.
Pork is apparently the main meat eaten, although beef, chicken, lamb and fish are also popular. Stews and goulashes are popular, as are kebabs, illustrating the influences of surrounding nations on Romanian cooking.

Drink for a Romanian Themed PartyWine is the preferred drink with meals in Romania, a country which produces a lot of wine (certainly one of the top ten producers in Europe, if not the World). Both red and white are produced, with varieties including Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Feteascã Regala and Grasã de Cotnari for white, and Merlot, Pinot Noir, Bãbeascã Neagrã and Feteascã Neagrã for reds.
Beer is available, and popular - usually of the pilsener/lager styles. International brands such as Heineken, Carlsberg, Becks, Holsten and Tuborg are readily available, as are local brands such as Ursus, Stejar, Bergenbier, Ciuc and Silva. Unfortunately we haven't found it easy to get hold of any of the local brands outside Romania.
Tuicã is however Romania's national drink. It is a type of plum brandy, and is pretty much ubiquitous in Romania; almost everybody drinks it, and lots of Romanians make it themselves (which is perfectly legal, apparently). Most of the orchards in Romania are plum orchards, and most of the plums produced go into making tuicã. It is consumed on almost any occasion; before a meal, at weddings, sporting occasions, festivals, and any occasion which requires raising a toast (which includes welcoming a guest into your home!). Sadly - or perhaps fortunately, as some of it is pretty lethal! - tuicã isn't easy to get hold of outside the country.
